About
I live in Munich with my wife Sunny and three kids. We also regularly spend time with family, friends, and colleagues in the US and in China.
I am the co-founder and CEO of Lamin. You can read up on what we're doing at lamin.ai/about & docs.lamin.ai. Consider dropping me a message via LinkedIn if you think that's interesting!
I'm trained as a scientist and so I have an academic CV and a Google Scholar profile. Misc things that you don't find on the CV:
- I love the work.
- I'm grateful to have found a good problem space to work on after a long journey through different areas of interest since childhood. I'm grateful to be working alongside my wife.
- I enjoy playing all kinds of sports with the kids and running & hiking. As a teen I competed in running, cycling, judo & jujutsu.
- I've enjoyed living & working in different places, as a scientist & engineer and in my teens as a social worker & kitchen aide: Rosenheim, Ribeauvillé, Dehradun, Augsburg, DC, Paris, Stuttgart, NYC, Boston. In my late teens & early twenties I backpacked doing things like hiking through central Romania using only a national map and a compass.
- I had pretty much missed out on LLMs until late 2022, similar to missing out on the interesting parts of the internet & technology until the late 2000s.
- As a teen - having been classically trained as a child - I taught myself a bunch of instruments and played shows. I always hoped to get back to playing music with the kids but it's taking longer than expected, and maybe we'll keep exploring things other than music.
- I've never owned a car and typically cycle everywhere. If it's too far, I take the train.
- Our family is quite obsessed with cooking, although I personally now do less of it.
- ...
Organizations for whom I have official advisor roles:
- Retro: a company to treat age-related diseases.
- scverse: a non-profit to advance Python tools for omics data in the life sciences.
I've had a long and formative relationship with Fabian Theis & his lab at Helmholtz Munich, the German national science center for environmental health.
